Residential
Admissions Information
Henderson International School
Welcome Residential students!
Henderson International School (HIS) is an independent, co-ed,
non-sectarian, Pre-school through twelfth grade college preparatory
school. Henderson International School’s strong and traditional
college preparatory academic course offerings are complemented by
enrichment offerings in Athletics, Theater Arts, Music, Visual and
Graphic Arts, Computer Science, and other offerings. Our central
mission is simple: create the very best academic program we can,
find the very best teachers in the region and put them with
motivated students. The result is excellence!
HIS is located in Henderson (part of the greater Las Vegas valley),
Nevada, and provides a wonderful setting for students from other
countries. With our beautiful campus and our geographical proximity
to many of the southwestern United States’ most breathtaking
landmarks (the Grand Canyon, the Rocky Mountains, the beaches of
Southern California), Henderson International offers a large range
of sporting and social activities while maintaining a safe
environment in which to live and study.
Academics
The high school currently offers 5 Advanced Placement (AP) courses
and is in the application phase for the International Baccalaureate
(IB) Diploma program. We will also offer specific tutoring in
English As A Second Language, including a summer session to begin
three weeks before the first day of school.
Advanced Placement Courses
Advanced Placement (AP) courses are college-level courses that
follow the curriculum set forth by the American College Board’s AP
Program. Qualified students in the tenth, eleventh and twelfth
grades may enroll in these classes with departmental approval.
Final exams are held in May and are externally graded by the
College Board. Success on exams may entitle the student to course
credit, and/or placement out of required courses at American
universities or colleges.
English Requirement for International Student Admission
International students whom apply to be admitted at HIS must
complete one of the following tests: TOEFL, SLEP or SSAT.
TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language – The
student must have a paper-based TOEFL score of 450, a
computer-based score of 140-153, or an internet-based score of
41-52.
SLEP: Secondary Level English Proficiency (SLEP) Test
– The student must pass the SLEP test with a scaled score of 45 or
above. The test can be administered and scored by an overseas
partner and results can be sent with the application to the
school.
SSAT: Secondary School Admission Test – This is the
admission exam required for entry by students within the United
States or other countries. The SSAT ranks verbal, reading and
quantitative skills from (1-99%) and compares the scores to other
students who have taken the SSAT in the past three years. The
students must pass the SSAT test with a nationally scaled score of
50 or above in all three areas.
Admissions Procedure
Applications will be considered by the Admissions Committee when
all admission application steps have been completed. Applicants are
promptly notified of the Committee’s decision. Parents have seven
days after receiving the contract to notify Admissions of intent to
enroll. Once the enrollment contract and a $3,000 deposit are
received, the Director of Admission can release a student’s I-20 so
that they may apply for their F-1 visa.
