By Second Grade our students are fully engaged in a rigorous
academic program. They continue to expand their understanding in all academic
areas, and are beginning to apply their mastery of basic skills to higher order
thinking and communication activities.
The students continue to increase their sense of self worth as they tackle the
increasing amount of independence their teachers work to cultivate. The
academic work becomes more challenging as the students work on a deeper
understanding of the core subjects.
During the course of the year they learn to perform multiplication and
division, to write in cursive and to use their writing as a means of
communication. In addition, they begin to apply critical thinking strategies in
Science class, and are given opportunities to collaborate with their classmates
to solve weekly activities. These "Science Fridays" are invaluable as the
students not only learn the science content, but learn to work as members of a
group to reach a common goal.
