Last year, the Nevada Legislature passed SB302, a new law that allows parents to use public school funds to pay for tuition at private schools. All students who are kindergarten age and older can receive about $5,000 from the state to use towards private school. The only catch is that the student must have attended public school in Nevada for at least 100 consecutive days prior to attending a private school.

There are two exceptions to the 100-day rule; military families and children under the age of seven. If your child was under the age of seven, but over the age of 5, on September 30, 2016 and attends private school this year, you may apply for the funds during the February 1, 2017 enrollment period for the 2016-17 school year and choose the May funding date.  Military families with school age children can apply at any time and do not need to complete 100 days of public school.

In order to apply for the 2016-17 school year, your child must be eligible to attend kindergarten and turn 5 years old by September 30, 2016.

You will need to reapply every year, so if you apply for the current school year, you will need to reapply for the 2017-18 school year.

Students who apply for an ESA will receive a portion of the $5,000 every three months (quarterly) deposited in a special ESA account, as long as they remain in a qualified, participating private school.

How to apply for an ESA

In 2017, there will be four opportunities to apply for an ESA.

The application dates for 2017 are:

  • February 1 – March 31
  • May 2  –  June 30
  • August 1 – September 30
  • November 1 – December 31

You may complete an application at the Nevada Treasurer’s website

If you are not sure if your child has attended 100 days of school, the Treasurer has posted 100-day dates for CCSD traditional and year-round tracks here

How and when ESAs are funded

There will be four funding periods that correspond with the application dates. You may apply as soon as possible, but be careful about selecting the date for the funding to be deposited into your account. If you select a funding date that does not correspond with when your child starts private school, your account will not be funded. You will receive instructions from the Treasurer's office about how to use your funds to pay for private school.

The Treasurer's office says ESAs will work similar to a Health Savings Account. The Treasurer will publish a list of vendors (private schools) that have chosen to participate in the ESA program and that the State has approved to receive the funds. You, the consumer, will still need to release the funds to pay your selected school. Not all private schools are qualified, participating ESA entities. Henderson International School is a qualified, participating entity.

The funding dates for 2016 are:

  • First week of February (for applicants who completed early enrollment in 2015)
  • First week of May
  • First week of August
  • First week of November

If you plan to start private school in August of 2017, please select August as your funding date.
