Alka Seltzer Rockets!

May 22, 2017

Students in fourth grade hypothesized which solution, vinegar, hot water or cold water, would provide their rockets with the fastest and furthest launch. Students engineered fins and a nose cone out of index cards to aid in the flight.
The young scientists were divided in their hypotheses. Some thought the vinegar would create more bubbles, leading to a larger build-up of carbon dioxide. Others used knowledge that heat expands as their reasoning behind believing hot water would perform the best.
Students launched their rockets in several heats to provide optimal opportunities to affirm or disprove their assertions. In the end, students concluded that hot water created the fastest and furthest launch. Good times!
