Rain Shadow Effect

April 06, 2017

Rain Shadow Effect: Discovering the hydrosphere, biosphere, geosphere and atmosphere.

The 5th graders have recently completed a  “Rain Shadow Effect” project. They applied what they have learned about the hydrosphere, biosphere, geosphere and atmosphere and how the Earth’s spheres interact to create the rain shadow effect. They created a model to explain the role of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Pacific Ocean and adiabatic cooling and heating, explaining why Death Valley is a desert.

This activity also taught them time management skills by planning and assigning responsibilities to each member of their team. The following day, the kids had the opportunity to present and explain their models.
