A Purposeful Pet Day, Oct. 10

Pet day is a time-honored tradition at HIS, but this year it's taking on a new purpose. We're partnering with a local animal rescue and rehabilitation group, Heaven Can Wait, to help animals in need and teach our students about responsible pet-ownership.

Heaven Can Wait is not a shelter. They are a group of volunteers who rescue animals, spay or neuter them, provide necessary medical care, and then place them in foster homes or rehabilitation programs. They also provide low-cost or no-cost medical services to pet owners who cannot afford veterinary care for their animals. The number one goal of these volunteers is to reduce the number of stray animals that will end up euthanized.

The work they do is important, and they are in constant need of supplies for their clinics and foster animals. This week, students brought home a list of supplies that we will begin collecting for Heaven Can Wait. The Heaven Can Wait supply drive is Oct. 4 through Oct. 10. 

Here are the items that we will collect during the drive:​

  • Paper Towels

  • Toilet Paper

  • Shelving

  • Dawn Dish Soap

  • Any Cleaning Supplies

  • Clear Totes

  • Fluorescent Light Bulbs

  • “Seven” Insect Powder

  • Push Brooms

  • Standard Broom / Dust Pan

  • 13 Gallon Kitchen Bags

  • 33 Gallon Trash Bags

  • 33 Gallon Trash Cans

  • Tarps

  • Light Blue Spray Paint

  • Metal Racks

  • LED Night Lights Plug-ins

  • Flat Bungee Straps, Plastic

  • Dremel 7300 4.8 Volt Pet Nail Grooming

  • AA, AAA, c 9v Batteries

  • Copy Paper

  • Cat toys

  • Kitty litter

  • Cat Treats

  • Cat brushes

  • Dry cat food

  • Canned cat food

  • Dog bones

  • Kongs for dogs

  • Dental treats

  • Squeaky toys

Students do not need to purchase items to help these animals. Used pillows, towels and blankets are easy donations that students can bring from home that will keep animals warm and comfortable this winter.

Of course, we will have our traditional, "sit-in-the-grass-with-your-pet-and-enjoy-the-morning" Pet Day on Oct. 10 from 8 to 9 a.m. As always, you will need to register your pet for Pet Day. Please check your email for the online registration form next week.
