High School Curriculum - AP Capstone

The foundation of our high school curriculum is our Academic Plan, with even more opportunity for personalized and differentiated learning.

Our secondary school expands on our STEAM offerings and provides students with multiple AP class options. They may also choose to pursue an AP Capstone advanced diploma.

Our private high school program is designed to prepare our students for a demanding and productive college experience, as well as the exciting opportunities that await them in the careers of tomorrow.

Our “balanced and robust” course offerings are heavier in the five areas of  – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics.

We offer “tracks” within some of these, for those students who exhibit a particular passion or talent for a focused area of study.

Some examples include:

  • A Programming track or an Electronics & Engineering track within the subject areas of Technology and Engineering,

  • A Visual Arts track, Musician track or an Acting track within the subject area of the Arts.

Interwoven within these STEAM offerings are Advanced Placement courses in most subject areas: from English to History, from Mathematics to Science to Spanish, and beyond.

AP courses allow students to study at a higher level than most other high school students and, upon passage of an AP exam, earn either college placement or credit.

AP Capstone

For those ready and willing for a truly rigorous high school experience, we offer the AP Capstone program. Students will successfully complete four AP courses during their four years of high school. In addition, they will take AP Seminar in their junior year and AP Research in their senior year.

  • AP Seminar - Juniors “investigate real-world topics of their choosing from multiple perspectives.” They learn to “collect and analyze information with accuracy and precision, develop arguments based on facts and effectively communicate them.”  They “work independently and with a team to research a topic and deliver a multimedia presentation and oral defense.”

  • AP Research - Seniors “design, plan, and conduct a year-long, research-based investigation to address a research question” of interest to them.  They connect with experts in the field they are studying to explore the topic/problem/issue and then apply proper research methods and practices to address it.

A score of 3 or above in AP Seminar, AP Research, plus the four additional AP Exams of their choosing, earns a high school graduate the AP Capstone Diploma™.

Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research, but not on four additional AP Exams, receive the AP Seminar & Research Certificate.

Both the diploma and certificate can help high school graduates distinguish themselves to some of the more prestigious institutions of higher-learning in the U.S.

AP Capstone has some key differences compared to the IB diploma. AP Capstone allows a student to specialize in specific areas of interest, as opposed to IB which requires the student to take advanced courses in all subject areas. Students pursuing humanities are often drawn towards the IB diploma, where AP Capstone can be geared towards either the sciences or liberal arts.

The diploma program was designed to enhance the discipline-specific study of AP courses. It allows students to investigate real world issues and develop skills necessary to conduct independent research and defend a scholarly thesis.
